A Great Addition to Your ASL Tool Kit

The worst thing about this application is the name “DIG” which is a mnemonic for “Dictionary and Inflection Guide”. It is the result of a long standing project at the NTID to build a comphrensive video dictionary that existed earlier as a subscription website and a CD. The application has two major components, a dictionary called “Signs” and categorized collections of signs called “Categories”; it has eliminated some of the more sophisticated capabilities of the website and the CD. The dictionary allows for both searching by entering a word or by browsing alphabetically. The category component organizes signs into related groups; for example, “Countries”. Novel categories are “Lexicalized Fingerspelling” and “Idiomatic Signs” which are handy references. The sign models are all native speakers and the videos are clear. A nice feature is that multiple variants are given for some words. At 2,700 words it is competitive with many conventional (paper) ASL dictionaries. This is another application that is a worthy addition to anyone’s tool kit for when you are mobile. It is self-contained and does not require any network connectivity which means you can use it anywhere, including on an airplane. It does not appear to have any significant bugs. The CD is a great companion when you are in front of your desk top.

Excellent resource!!!!

Wow!!! This is really great. So many signs and SO many sentences. My teacher says this is the most authoritative one out there. Very much worth a couple bucks!

Worth every penny!

I really like this app. The signing is so natural, and its really well put together. I can even test myself by turning the ASL or English sentence translations on or off. Fantastic!!!

Invaluable resource!

I purchased this ASL Dictionary when it was first made available on CD Rom from NTID for $50 (10 years ago!) and used it constantly in my work as a Teacher of the Deaf and interpreting. To find its only $1.99 now as an app on my phone that I have access to anywhere I go is a phenomenal deal!! A must-have for anyone who works in the field or who wants to learn sign! Thank you so much to the team at NTID that developed this- I will spread the word about this incredible resource!

Not worth the money

When I read all the great reviews about this app I thought I was onto something. However, this app freezes almost every time I open it. Also, the words are very limited. I couldnt even find the sign for truck when I wanted to teach the sign to my non-verbal grandson. This app is not what it was made out to be.

Good

The price for this app is appropriate although I still have to keep some ASL free apps on my iPod because there arent that many simple words. I think there should be an update for more words and have an option to somehow slow the video down some words are just too fast. There should also be a favorites list, at least it would make my life easier.

I expect better.(v1.0)

I like the vocabulary choices and the signers are very clear. I dont like that the app freezes which causes a delay in sign completion.

Wonderful Learning Tool

I think this is an excellent resource. I am using it to teach myself ASL. Yes, the sentences are fast, but it helps you learn how true users of ASL communicate. Thank you!

Good Resource

About the app: Vocabulary: When you first go in, scroll all the way down to the bottom. After ten or so fast scrolls of my thumb, Im only at section "C"! There is a good chunk of words in here. Click on a word: The video will play, but probably too soon, so go to the little "i" button (main page) and there will be an option to delay the "before and after" of the video. This gives you some time to prepare. Click on the arrow next to the word: There will be at least on sentence option where you can see the sign in a sentence. NOTE: it is all ASL and they sign pretty fast, so if youre just starting out, it will be hard. Other features: Other features include being able to turn off the English translation on the sentence button/boxes until after youve watched the ASL. Overall: this would probably work better if youve had some experience with ASL already. The signing is really fast, and many of the videos cut off too early and too late for you to see the whole sign into completion, (much like saying "Appl--" if youre trying to say "Apple") which is sometimes frustrating, but if you watch a few times youll get it. Id definitely recommend this app for those whove already begun to learn some of the grammar and syntax of ASL.

ASL Dictionary

Fantastic! I went to school at RIT/NTID. They have the knowledge and experience to make this app perfect and can be used by not just hearing who want to learn but by Terps who need a mobile resource and students who are HOH who need to learn that are attending NTID, or ASL students learning at other schools too. This is also great for emergency personal who need a basic knowledge to interact with us DEAFies. I great bargain for $2 in comparing a heavy dictionary at $60. Amanda pulisciano

..

I love the amount of words just wish the videos werent so fast

Too fast!

Can we PLEASE get a slo-mo option?!

Great!!!

Definitely worth the cost I love it!!! Its great to use in conjunction with my book for the signs Im just not sure about.

Good start...

It has lots of vocab choices and the videos show real people signing (and its not just the same person throughout), but it has NO slow-motion and NO repeat options, so it is limited as a learning tool. Some of the signs are so quick, I cant see what they are doing at all.

Good

The search by category is a well constructed feature, and the inclusion of idioms and lexicalized signs is great. It has a large amount of countries which is great. Would prefer if the app would give more control over the video like ability to loop or slow down. Also, would like to see profanity added and more idioms, if possible.

Thank you!

Now that Im picking up on my vocab, I needed something to help me with the more abstract phrases and English idioms. I want to make sure Im being a good language model for my 7 year old even though shes way ahead of me. Now I feel like I can communicate even better with her especially when my Deaf adult friends arent around to catch my errors.
